    I’m not surprised. I’d be more surprised if it hasn’t been going on for longer. I think ClamAV has all the features that you’d get from a free antivirus minus heuristic analysis. ClamAV has 6,740,507 signatures already and AV companies seem to care more about spying on their users than they do about real protection.

    I think that if ClamAV/ClamWin had more marketing, it could compete to some degree. I’m confident that if ClamWin could do heuristic analysis, its effectiveness would be pretty even with at least one legitimate free AV, if it isn’t already. It’s hard to say because companies seem to want to hide how many signatures their databases contain. I’d maybe look into it more if I still ran Windows.

      I almost forgot about the clamav-unofficial-sigs package, which increases the total sig count. I’m not sure how good the quality is though.
