I think they twitter will become a lot more lax on bans, potentially more strict on banning people who make fun of elon. I think trump will return to twitter. Overall, seems like a ginormous win for the libertarians/ancaps.

I think we should capitalize on this moment and bring way more people to the fediverse.

I think this is a good time to remind people: these sort of opportunities will often present themselves due to a combination of factors well beyond any fediverse user’s control. Trying to force them to occur is like trying to build a house out of unpacked sand, it’ll quickly fall apart.

What advocates need to do is to focus on building a solid foundation within the Fediverse so that these opportunities can be capitalized on more effectively each time. We don’t want it where people join then leave when the hype dies down, when they see a lack of content, or get annoyed with platform quirks. Unfortunately, it seems a lot of discourse tries to focus on marketing-first and assumes the rest will sort itself out. It’s the opposite actually.

Relating to the topic at hand though, I agree with Eugen. Direct people to other instances. Do not let mastodon.social’s downtime dissuade people. If anything, this might be a good opportunity to spread traffic across instances.

Marketing gets people in the door; everything else about the experience determines if they stay on the fediverse or not.

I have an account on mastodon.social but I’m thinking about moving it somewhere else, if that’s possible

Yes, it is possible to migrate your account to a new server. There is an option in the settings.

Is it possible to change the name of my account?

I got it back in 2017 so I kinda want to keep it but the handle I sofned up with is kinda of lame.

You can easily change the display name of your account. Check the settings.

To check your username, I think you will need to create a new account on the same server or else you can create a new account on another instance and then migrate your account.

Yeah that’s what I thought. Oof I just want a nicer short username.

Does Mastodon have any plans for how usernames and old accounts get retired? I guess maybe that’s just left up to individual servers though.

Just a thought! I have changed my personal website location multiple times, but I have the same domain name each time. Do usernames@domainname.com change within the fediverse even if you change servers? like if I restart a server? If I start a new server years later and give it the same name as an old server but don’t move over the content, does it still appear on other servers that are federated up?

With mastodon they encourage joining other instances on their site, same with lemmy. Unfortunately matrix doesnt do this on their site or on any majorclient, which is the main reason most people use matrix.org, as people leave the defaults
