Is there a smartphone that I could recommend to someone that currently wants to buy a last generation iphone? They want lots of storage and good battery life I think.

I am worried about all the tracking shit, I guess if the phone could potentially work with lineageOS that would be great too.

tl;dl is there a go-to smartphone atm?

Fairphone 4 will soon have CalyxOS support. I won’t recommend LineageOS because it’s unsecure but here are some device I would recommend buying first or second hand that can run (or soon) secure and private ROM (DivestOS, CalyxOS and GrapheneOS):

    • OnePlus 6T
    • OnePlus 7
    • OnePlus 7T
    • OnePlus 8
    • OnePlus 8T
    • OnePlus 9
    • OnePlus 9 Pro
    • Pixel 4a 5G
    • Pixel 4a
    • Pixel 6
    • Fairphone 4 (The Anti iPhone)

All should have decent battery life if they really want something high end like iPhone 13 :

    • OnePlus 8T, 9 or 9 Pro
    • Pixel 6

Oh? What’s the security issue with LineageOS?

It does not allow you to relock the bootloader

But if the device no longer recieve security update and no customROM allow relocking the bootloader, you don’t do that much sacrifices. I won’t use anything related to banking, crypto or money in general on those unlocked devices.

Fairphone is the only consumer device (not hacker device like Pinephone/Librem) that has reasonable hardware and features. To my knowledge, no other device maker even comes close. Specifically i would recommend “Fairphone 3” which is well supported on all free systems, and has a micro-SD slot for “lots of storage”.

I mean, if you want to got with LineageOS just search for one that they support (and that will have at least 2 or 3 years of software support) and that is moderately new. If they were released recently they will most likely have very similar components, what I would care more is a good battery and disk storage, since CPU and RAM doesn’t matter that much to me on a smartphone unless you’re trying to use to play video games, which most of them can run with a more or less new phone.

Google Pixels have >1 day’s battery life and 64+GB of space. I have a Pixel 3a, but going for a Pixel 4 or higher will guarantee GrapheneOS and LineageOS will support it for years to come.

There is no SD slot, that’s true. If someone wants to use one, Pixels are not the way to go.

My recommendation of Pixels is in large part due to their support by multiple projects. If one doesn’t want to use GrapheneOS for any number of reasons, one may install CalyxOS or LineageOS instead.

        Re: This Questionable Decision

Looks like it was disabled in release 2022021314 with the following description:

stop enforcing camera sound when using a carrier based in India/Japan/Korea since we aren’t required to enforce it and is trivially bypassed in multiple ways so it’s nothing more than an annoyance

I personally use the pixel 6 with GrapheneOS. Battery is great, and privacy wise nothing comes close. The sandboxed Google services could also be helpful if that is something needed. I personally don’t need anything Google.

I could recommend Oneplus5t, but AT&T now prevents them from working right, after feb 22, they say its a 3g phone (bullshit)… i’d imagine others will follow suit. With custom firmware they are fine (i wonder if they can’t identify them?), and the Oneplus6 is still “supported”. But in the spirit of future proofing, probably shouldn’t get anything without 5g… and that more than doubles the price. But if you’ve got the money, I’ve had a great experience with Oneplus.

There is Volla Phone, a relatively new supplier in Germany. They sell Gigaset phobes preinstalled with Volla OS which is compatible with Android. Don’t have any experience with it, but you may have a look at volla.online.
