A lot of cult movies are also hangout movies. I think the second viewing where you know the plot doesn’t really matter at all helps a lot. The first time it’s easy to walk away being like I watched these weirdos do nothing? Repeat viewings are “I’m watching my weird friends do nothing.”
I had a little personal crisis when I watched The Big Lebowski for the first time and just hated it. I was so bored.

I was very lukewarm to it my first viewing. It gets so much funnier with repeated viewings. It’s my favorite comedy.

This was mine as well. It’s mildly amusing, but I really don’t get the massive hype on it.
