Highly recommend checking out wefwef - closest option to an Apollo clone as I’ve seen so far in terms of UI and functionality, and doesn’t even need to be installed. Memmy is a very good second place option, but I’ve been using wefwef since I heard about it yesterday and ZI think it’s better.
It’s good but laggy. Swiping doesn’t feels native unfortunately.
Are you using it as an installed PWA? I’m not having any issues with animations or scrolling. I have run into a few weird UI bugs with slide up menus within communities, but that’s about it.
As the Memmy dev I can also highly recommend wefwef. Great product for such a short lifespan.
I love your app
Now kith!
Now kith!
Thanks for all you’re doing!
Quick question: I noticed the API calls aren’t (weren’t?) compressed, is that on purpose?
Going outbound or inbound? Outbound the requests are super basic, inbound they are pretty large. There’s a lot of limitations on that.
For example to get basic user info you have to receive a bunch of other information that you’re not going to bother using. Hopefully in time this will get changed, because there’s no reason to be receiving so much data whenever you really only need a few bytes.
the json coming back from requests like showing a thread was not compressed when I checked yesterday (firefox on ubuntu): https://discuss.tchncs.de/pictrs/image/1a99e758-deaa-46f6-8eff-3aa2158858ad.png
but I just checked again and now it’s correctly responding with compression (chrome on windows)
Ohh you’re referring to wefwef. I’m not the wefwef dev, I’m the memmy dev. Thought you were talking about API calls memmy makes.
I just did the PWA install today and it definitely fixes the glitchy swipes.
I do have installed as a PWA, and although I’m really liking it visually, it’s a bit buggy. I’d like to know if the bugginess is because of its beta status or the fact that it’s not native.
If it’s the latter, it’d be unfortunate since it’s making my switch to Lemmy so much smoother as I feel like I’m using Apollo, which I’m very used to.
It’s probably a bit of both - wefwef has been around for literally just days at this point I believe, so I have high hopes it will continue to improve.
Beyond that, there are a lot of people who feel Apollo is/was the best user experience for Reddit, and there will be a LOT of devs trying to emulate that - one way or another, we’re going to get a high-quality Apollo replacement eventually.
Thats’s fair, most, if not all, of these apps has just started development, and it’s pretty impressive what they’ve accomplished so far.
Right now I feel like when Mastodon started to grow exponentially last year, all of a sudden there were a ton of new pretty good clients. I can see something similar happening here.
I gotta say tho that although using wefwef is helping me getting used to not open Apollo, I think it would be really great if it grows to become its own thing once the platform matures.
For me, it’s already amazing on my tablet, but quite slow on my phone.
Seems to be a performance thing. Native apps like Connect and Liftoff are still overall better on lower end devices because of it imo.
Really hope it comes out as a native app too at some point
IDK maybe I am being paranoid here :) Mlem feels smoother for me. It may be about frame rate too. I’m using 14 Pro and it has 120hz as I know.
Yeah I can also see that animations aren’t as smooth as Mlem or other native apps, but it’s not bad enough that it bothers me. On an 14 Pro also.
I imagine this has to do with the fact that PWAs likely don’t have access to full hardware acceleration for graphics, but I also don’t know enough about PWAs and iOS to know for sure.
I’m using it right now, it works just fine
What kind of phone are you running? Feels fine to me.
I started with Mlem and wasn’t a huge fan and was primarily using Memmy. But I decided to try mlem again as it’s been a while and it looks much better! Might be my new daily driver. I’ll give wefwef a try too.
Yeah like a week after I joined they completely changed the display, and it’s been my heavy hitter. Wefwef feels like I never left Apollo though.
Wow WefWef as a PWA is super nice.
It’s great, but I really wish it had the equivalent of Apollo’s “compact” mode!
They just shipped it minutes ago! Second release in less than 24h lol
It’s there now!
It’s there!! Now I need the ability to remove the up/downvote arrows and switch the image/link, etc to the right side of the screen!

Connect is pretty fast for how stable it is compared to Jerboa, imo.

It worked for me once I logged in.

Lemmy.world is apparently rate limiting the wefwef.app domain. They are working on resolving it. In the meantime you can try the suggested solutions in their community https://lemmy.world/post/801298
For example self hosting it or using other’s publicly available versions of it like https://w.opnxng.com/ though you should always be cautious using other’s instances.
Using it right now. So far it’s nice. But I have like 7 plus the browser. See which becomes my default in time. I am just so used to RIF it’s going take an adjustment.
I’ve never seen web apps as advantage personally. I’d much rather have a local install.
Agreed in most scenarios, but wefwef is arguably the best PWA I’ve ever used - it’s nice right now as an option to get something into user’s hands quickly without waiting for App Store approval. Would love to see it become a native app eventually.
Apollo is more like the wife who was murdered by Reddit, now watching you from heaven, hoping that you find a new social media platform to make you happy.
Apollo was with you under a white blanket in a brightly lit bedroom.
She made me promise I would move on before she was deprecated
I started using jerboa cause of a random suggestion, how does everyone feel about it? I noticed it doesnt collect user data and I think it said it encrypts stuff, which I like for privacy
I had to switch to connect for Lemmy, as jerboa was bugging out and not showing me anything on my feed from outside my local instance.
Waiting for sync for Lemmy but it’s roughly 6 weeks away from release according to developer.
WHAT Sync is gonna continue on with Lemmy?? Oh I am so in, this just made my day!
Same, I do wish connect had quick buttons to move between connects. You can collapse a comment section by holding down the parent comment, but I haven’t found a way to navigate quickly.
Connect dev here. It’s coming! I like that feature a lot too.
Just wanna let you know that I am usong your app now and that it is the reason I decided to give Lemmy a try. I was weary about migrating because Lemmy seemed a little to complicated/unintuitive, but your app fixed all that for me. THANK YOU
I’m so glad to hear that! I am actually new to Lemmy too (switched over when subs went private) and couldn’t find an app that wasn’t confusing to me so I decided to make one.
Awesome! Ty!
I’ve only started using it, but I’m liking it alright. That being said, I’m going to use Sync as soon as it’s available.
After being here for 5 minutes. After not knowing how to login 6 minutes ago.
I’ve already forgot reddit exists.
What’s Reddit?
Reddit? Damn near killed it!
What’s Reddit?
What’s Reddit?
Reddit? Never heard that before
I am still getting used to it coming from RIF but it’s growing on me.

Same doesn’t seem bad, just not what I’m used to.

I would’ve liked to try it, but it crashes on app launch :/ using Connect For Lemmy instead
I’m also using Connect, but will probably switch to Sync once it comes out
I couldn’t login two weeks and had to do it on thed web page. I can’t download images in comment sections :(
I’m using it. I like it better than connect which is the only other one on the play store right now. There are more but you have to install them off github. I’ll just wait till they make it to play store to try those out.
I couldn’t even log in to jerboa so I just downloaded connect for limmey about 10 minutes ago and already I prefer it.
It’s good. I like the feel of it.
The one annoying bug right now is that post sorting gets stuck to your account’s default settings, but that’s not too bad.
You should try wefwef
I’m using it. I came from Relay. I like Jerboa because it has two features I really liked in Relay, colour-coded threads for readability, and swiping to get back from a comment section to the main feed. I’m not too fussy other than that (dark mode and small font also appreciated though). It works well for me in general, I can switch between my accounts easily which I like, though there was a bit where my instances weren’t up-to-date enough for the app and notifications have been a bit on/off, but that’s teething problems. It also sometimes forgets my preference for defaulting to all > today, it puts it back on active.
My big complaint is that it seems to exit on hitting the back button.
Jerboa just broke it’s self for me, if your home instance isn’t on .18 Jerboa will crash on load.
I’m using liftoff and I like it more, because it remembers that I only want posts from the communities that I’m subscribed to.
This is a setting in most of the clients, including Jerboa
Jerboa was one of the first legit apps out there for Android. But then it killed itself and became a horribly buggy, crashing mess. It doesn’t seem to crash as much anymore, but scrolling is very laggy and glitchy still for me. Wouldn’t recommend it at the moment, sadly, but I appreciate it as a pioneer.
I love Memmy, but that icon looks like a clown tick.
We already are looking at adding community icons. 🤘

Glad I can help!
good bot
Beep boop I’m actually a person haha
was a joke, but I’d be impressed if a bot could give such a good description
Beep boop well, you never know ;)
That reminds me, I should be more mindful and include altext in my posts.
I’m keeping Apollo on my phone for the memories 😢
Same with Infinity😅
Infinity for Everything (Threadiverse) is under development.
I deleted rif because I absolutely will click on it just by habbit
I will keep sync on my phone because everytime I accidentally open it, I will remember why I dislike reddit and vow never to go back.
I just changed the connect for lemmy icon to the Rif icon because it just felt weird without it.
lol i love this. i’m just gonna gaslight myself into thinking wefwef is apollo
Same, but that “forever” notification icon. Argh.
You can turn off badges in the settings app, under notifications :)

i keep instinctively clicking it
Holy shit I’m posting this from wefwef… how the hell is this as good as Memmy!?
Is it just me or is wefwef letting promoted by bots?
Hmm not sure, I’m honestly just a guy looking for a new home & app to be my new addiction
Not a bot, but I think it works surprisingly well for a non native and pretty new app.
I think some of us are just surprised at how well it works with almost no options (yet). Whatever makes it easiest for people to migrate is fine by me.
I’ve tried Memmy, Mlem, and Wefwef and so far Wefwef has been the nicest to use coming from Apollo. It’s definitely still buggy but overall it works well.
Nope, I’m just a fan. What’s the issue with wefwef? Mlem sucks. Memmy is not bad, but wefwef pretty much replaces Apollo for me, so I’m happy with it.
My biggest complaint at this point is the backend. I’ve signed up for a couple lemmy instances at this point and both are having issues with scaling.
I wonder if Christian can reuse Apollo as a Lemmy client and keep the project going
Wefwef is a web app that is a near carbon copy of Apollo. It’s how I’m browsing and it’s great. Much better than the web interface.
I’ve got that bookmarked and it is great, but I’ve been using Memmy for now. It does the slide for up/down votes (or whatever they’re called here) but a slightly different UI
He addressed that a bit ago. That kind of undertaking would be pretty big, since the data structure on the back end is so much different. It’s not out of the question, but not something he wants to do right now.
Yeah, he definitely deserves some time off after this. But if he were to get around to it at some point he’d have a ton of users
oh, absolutely. I’m keeping the app installed in hopes that it makes a rebased comeback.
It would almost certainly be a new app, imo.
Take a look at wefwef (not a typo). It mirrors the look of Apollo and I love it here.
Actually he could be I think rn he needs a break tbf
I think he’s mentioned he doesn’t really have an interest in that right now. But I wish so too.
I’ve got like 4 downloaded right now
I’ve got 5
- Mlem
- Memmy
- WefWef
- Thunder
- Liftoff
I’ve got
- Thunder
- Jerboa
- PWA (when everything else fails)
Based Thunder Enjoyer
The more the better
I have 6 downloaded so I can try them all. Lmao
Jerboa
Connect
Liftoff
Lemmur
Thunder
WefwefEdit: Connect was my favorite until i realized its absolutely riddled with trackers. RIP. Currently trying Wefwef but ill probably come back to Jerboa.
What platform are these all for?
I’m Android but i think a couple are on both.
It looks like thunder and Liftoff are for both android and ios. wefwef also works on both platforms but only has iOS graphic for now (but devs want to also add the android one)
Which Reddit client are you coming from? Which Lemmy app are you enjoying the most right now? I’m an Android user coming from RIF. So far I have the most experience with Wefwef and Jerboa, and Wefwef is winning by leaps and bounds. I haven’t tried too much of the rest, but I’m curious of your opinion on them if you’ve tried them all!
I’m from RIF. I still haven’t tried the other ones because I’ve been doing other stuff. Lol
Fair!

Excited to try Boost when it releases.
I saw some post about the trackers but I didn’t really understand what that meant. Can you explain?
Haha, me too!
- Liftoff
- Connect for lemmy
- Jerboa
- Thunder

Any prior RIF users with some advice for which app to switch to for Lemmy that’s the most similar?
Check out WefWef for Lemmy
Is this an android app? Cause I couldn’t find it on any app store lol
It’s a web app at http://wefwef.app
I was also confused by this and resigned to not using it because I’m a silly goose who doesn’t understand what a web app is… but then saw someone link to the wefwef website, figured I’d give it a shot, and turned out it’s surprisingly simple. Just go to the link below, download, and now there’s an app on my home page for wefwef. I don’t know the difference between it and my other “normal” apps, but it does seem to work! Lol
Link: www.wefwef.app
It’s a web app. Just search for it on Google, that’s how I found it.
It’s a web app, so https://wefwef.app
Yup, but you have to get it through TestFlight right now. It’s going to be on the App Store soon though.
Here’s a link to the Memmy TestFlight page.
I’m using it and it is the closest thing to apollo on my phone. just added to home screen!
Ditto! Feels familiar and I like it.
Just started using it myself. Feels surprisingly like Apollo so far.
The developer of Sync is porting it to Lemmy. The initial release should happen in the next 6 weeks.
Yes, I’m SO exited for the Sync for Lemmy app!! Today was a sad day.

I’m liking connected too. Haven’t tried anything else, but haven’t felt like needed to either.
The only thing I’d change about Connect is the visability of comment interaction buttons but other than that with a few tweaks to font sizes and stuff it’s a fairly similar experience to RIF.
I’ll second Wefwef. It’s pretty slick.
I second this. It honestly feels like an iOS app.

Connect for Lemmy, so far so good
Seconding Connect. Only been using it for the past 24hrs and the UI is equally as minimalist with some new idiosyncrasies to get used to.
3rding this. I absolutely love Connect.
Connect is GOAT. Only thing I need is custom font size then it would be perfect, at the moment it’s either too big or too small.
It’s overall pretty good so far but I find that the swipe interactions with comments and posts can be a bit clunky. I frequently will swipe too far and accidentally save a comment when I just want to upvote. I’m still so used to Sync though.
Tried a few of these apps so far. Connect is really nice! It seems really snappy, and got it mostly working just like how I’d had RIF setup before.
I am using Liftoff, it’s not finished yet but I like the UI
Jerboa for Lemmy works pretty well for me. It’s a little rough around the edges but you can’t beat the low price of free.

I hope so… I love boost.

connect and liftoff
As a former RIF user, I personally like Liftoff, which you can get in the Play Store, but other popular options are Jerboa, Thunder, Connect for Lemmy, wefwef, and Summit.
Memmy has seriously improved over the past two weeks, it’s development has been extremely fast and I’m very impressed with my limited casual use so far.
❤️
Dude Memmy is soo so good and the ONLY ONE who has implemented my request for moving the images/links in compact mode from the left hand side to the right hand side ❤️
This is just a comment to have myself counted as part of the reddit migration
And to think you could have been the first thatpilotguy, not the 89th. But you assigned yourself as the 89th thatpilotguy anyway.
Self awareness is often important in life
Same
Ditto, welcome aboard o7
It’s wild seeing the difference in number of votes and comments today compared to the last week or so since I signed up.
I just changed the connect for lemmy icon to the Rif icon because it just felt weird without it lol
there’s less content but I find the content to be of higher quality. at least on what I’d consider the frontpage
