Highly recommend checking out wefwef - closest option to an Apollo clone as I’ve seen so far in terms of UI and functionality, and doesn’t even need to be installed. Memmy is a very good second place option, but I’ve been using wefwef since I heard about it yesterday and ZI think it’s better.

Are you using it as an installed PWA? I’m not having any issues with animations or scrolling. I have run into a few weird UI bugs with slide up menus within communities, but that’s about it.

I do have installed as a PWA, and although I’m really liking it visually, it’s a bit buggy. I’d like to know if the bugginess is because of its beta status or the fact that it’s not native.

If it’s the latter, it’d be unfortunate since it’s making my switch to Lemmy so much smoother as I feel like I’m using Apollo, which I’m very used to.

It’s probably a bit of both - wefwef has been around for literally just days at this point I believe, so I have high hopes it will continue to improve.

Beyond that, there are a lot of people who feel Apollo is/was the best user experience for Reddit, and there will be a LOT of devs trying to emulate that - one way or another, we’re going to get a high-quality Apollo replacement eventually.

Thats’s fair, most, if not all, of these apps has just started development, and it’s pretty impressive what they’ve accomplished so far.

Right now I feel like when Mastodon started to grow exponentially last year, all of a sudden there were a ton of new pretty good clients. I can see something similar happening here.

I gotta say tho that although using wefwef is helping me getting used to not open Apollo, I think it would be really great if it grows to become its own thing once the platform matures.

For me, it’s already amazing on my tablet, but quite slow on my phone.

Seems to be a performance thing. Native apps like Connect and Liftoff are still overall better on lower end devices because of it imo.

Really hope it comes out as a native app too at some point

IDK maybe I am being paranoid here :) Mlem feels smoother for me. It may be about frame rate too. I’m using 14 Pro and it has 120hz as I know.

Yeah I can also see that animations aren’t as smooth as Mlem or other native apps, but it’s not bad enough that it bothers me. On an 14 Pro also.

I imagine this has to do with the fact that PWAs likely don’t have access to full hardware acceleration for graphics, but I also don’t know enough about PWAs and iOS to know for sure.

Agreed in most scenarios, but wefwef is arguably the best PWA I’ve ever used - it’s nice right now as an option to get something into user’s hands quickly without waiting for App Store approval. Would love to see it become a native app eventually.

I had to switch to connect for Lemmy, as jerboa was bugging out and not showing me anything on my feed from outside my local instance.

Waiting for sync for Lemmy but it’s roughly 6 weeks away from release according to developer.

I’m using it. I came from Relay. I like Jerboa because it has two features I really liked in Relay, colour-coded threads for readability, and swiping to get back from a comment section to the main feed. I’m not too fussy other than that (dark mode and small font also appreciated though). It works well for me in general, I can switch between my accounts easily which I like, though there was a bit where my instances weren’t up-to-date enough for the app and notifications have been a bit on/off, but that’s teething problems. It also sometimes forgets my preference for defaulting to all > today, it puts it back on active.

Jerboa was one of the first legit apps out there for Android. But then it killed itself and became a horribly buggy, crashing mess. It doesn’t seem to crash as much anymore, but scrolling is very laggy and glitchy still for me. Wouldn’t recommend it at the moment, sadly, but I appreciate it as a pioneer.

[‘Distracted Boyfriend’ - A stock photo image of a man walking side by side with a woman in a blue shirt, holding hands, as a different woman in a red shirt walks past. The man appears to be whistling at the woman walking past, showing clear interest in her looks, while the woman he is walking with looks at him. Nope, I’m just a fan. What’s the issue with wefwef? Mlem sucks. Memmy is not bad, but wefwef pretty much replaces Apollo for me, so I’m happy with it.

My biggest complaint at this point is the backend. I’ve signed up for a couple lemmy instances at this point and both are having issues with scaling.
