Hi guys, I want to communicate with people here via chat if possible, and just wondering what people here are using?

I want to use a protocol if possible, and definitely not discord or some other software run by a corporation. Obviously IRC was the thing to use back in the day. Do people still use it or something else?

I love the fediverse and the idea of getting away from the big tech companies, and am looking for whatever real time chat software is recommended right now. Thanks.

Edit: Setup on Matrix, thanks guys! @xero-:matrix.org hit me up if you want!

I don’t use it but Matrix/XMPP is what you’re looking for.

Cool, I’ve heard of it. What client is good to use?

Element is the most featureful one. You’ll probably want to have it around even if you don’t use it every day. Cinny looks pretty close to Discord (and is overall cozier imo), and FluffyChat is more Telegram/WhatsApp-y and seems to be one of the better ones for phones.

I’m using Element. Any channels etc you’d recommend?

I’ve been away from Matrix for a while so idk about any new and interesting ones, but it’s generally the whole Linux-y FOSS types of the internet that tend to have reasonably active Matrix channels, compared to the general purpose audience of, say, Discord.

I’ve used SchildiChat in the past which is a fork of Element with few tweaks like the two sides chat view.
