It’s not like the hotplate doesn’t work… from what I’ve tested. The unit has no stove or oven, just this hotplate

Probably he thinks it’s inconvenient to use, as someone who is used to a conventional stove.

I am assuming you already thought about a fan in a window so I won’t mention that. For smoke, you can strap a good filter to a box fan to make a cheap air filter. We do this when we can’t even open windows because of wildfire smoke. I don’t have a good solution to humidity. The landlord should care about getting an exhaust fan in the bathroom to protect their own interests.

Basically save up for an air filter if possible

Yep, good filters aren’t cheap and cheap filters won’t do you any good, but they will last you forever if you are only using it once in a while. And a filter strapped to a fan is way cheaper than a built to purpose air filter. And the fan still works as a fan when you take the filter off.

You could setup your own ventilation for cheap if you have a window. But from a legal perspective the owner is supposed to do it: to my knowledge in the norms no shower is allowed unless you have ventilation. Depending on your existing relationships with the owners and how conflictual you’d like it to be, it may be as simple as asking politely… or you may take information from a tenant’s union and threaten with lawsuits.

EDIT: Yes humidity is a big problem for mold, and breathing problems!
