And Microsoft is known throughout the world as an honest company that follows the laws, complies with regulations and keeps it’s word.

I would say they are known for skirting the edge of the law, sometimes getting in trouble but usually not, or at least nothing serious. They don’t outright break it, and the software re-installing might not break it. Whatever happens, you can bet they’ll do the most anti-consumer thing they may be allowed to get away with.

This is why I keep updates disabled.

“Oh no, you’ll be at risk!” phhbt. Nonsense.

I’ve had zero issues from not being updated, but plenty from updates breaking stuff.

Even LTSC only gets updates 2x a year, so apparently even MS agrees.

Still I’m not going back to the Windows. Even if I do, Win11 wouldn’t be my choice.

I thought they said it was an integral part of the operating system and couldn’t be removed. Are you telling me that Microsoft lied?

to be fair you always could remove edge, it just legitimately broke a lot of windows apps

I can +1 this, a looong time ago I tried uninstalling Microsoft Edge and it made the system go ballistic. Every time I clicked a link, instead of going to my default browser (Chrome then) it would just open a completely broken Edge window with no functionality. Any time I tried to change settings, it’d do the same thing. Anything to do with touching the internet got fucked. I spent hours trying to reinstall Edge, contacting a Microsoft support person who was useless, before I realized that the official site only provides the Windows download for Edge if you set your user agent with… any system other than Windows. Huh.

I think MS talked about how they handle detection. And it isn’t based on Geolocation, but the choosen install language/region. If you choose one where the DMA applies, you will get the DMA options. For english speakers there should be a Euope (English) install option.

Tho, this does require reinstalling your system.

duckduckgo is in bed with Microsoft now…

What? Oh no! I have to look into this.

Edit: is this about their not blocking Microsoft queries? I see that outcry caused them to pivot away from that stance but that story gives me pause. Is there even a privacy search engine to replace them?

That’s still a lot less than previous rulings. I remember when Windows was forced to tell users that alternative browsers existed and had to offer download links. I doubt many people beyond experienced users will take advantage of this.

Finally a reason to change from 10 to 11. This laptop will probably go to 11 for me, but my next PC is probably going to be linux.

Linux yes or yes, but probably in dual boot for several reasons (Drivers, certain needed soft, etc). The perfect OS don’t exist, because of this using both, Windows and Linux is the best choice, depending on the use

If you get a PC to specifically run linux, you can make sure everything works well on it and avoid driver problems.

I’m not sure if I like this news or not… It’s good news for Windows users for sure… But somebody could think then “windows is not so bad” and lose the momentum to migrate to libre software, which is IMHO the future if we are to hope for a non dystopian one.

    turdware is EOL.

sure some ppl still use myspace, tidal or google search like its the 00s but lets be real: with the rise of AI it is also tze end of US based services - as meta and google pointed out it is impossible to gate AI.

the only thing that will prevail is FOSS. the later you join, the more likely you’ll be the dinosaur turning into a fossil.

over and over again dumb twats keep rooting for their echochamber of stupid and 10 years later they crawl back to society and like drop whatsapp for signal, office CD ISO for googledocs and so on.

right now i think the biggest indicator if being a twat is owning anything from apple. they are currently the biggest stronghold of stupid. geez, remember my dad rooting for VHS and DVD…put in so much money and now it is worth nothing and everyone knows he was a dumb twat. so see an iPhone user 8 think of how stupid people are.
