so this CHEF-KOCH guy banned and deleted my comments from his community. I messaged to ask why and he blocked me from messaging him. He recently made a post in /c/linux and i am unable to comment on the post of any of the comments to the post.

Is this intended by the devs? It seems like it only functions to hinder discussion. Say this dude just started posting all over the place in different topics and such, they could effectively block anyone they don’t agree with which would just kill any actual discussion on any of these posts. It seems incredibly backwards when he is not the admin of those communities. Who is he to say who gets to comment there?

Because you (like me) had the audacity to answer on a comment on his protonvpn advertisement where he spread FUD around wireguard. I tried to correct the points that where just plain bullshit in some back and forth and at some point he went on and said

This thread here will also not a bashing or fanboyism or what is a VPN discussion, or I will lock the conversation. [sic]

Yep sorry, this is a current bug related to blocking I still have to fix: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/1793

But if they banned you from their community, you won’t be able to comment there. And if they blocked you, you obvi can’t pm them. I don’t know if @CHEFKOCH@lemmy.ml’s behavior is banworthy or anything, it is his community. I’d just create alternate communities and block him or his community so it doesn’t show up on your feed.

OK good I’m glad it’s just a bug and not a feature. Yeah I have no problem not being able to post in his community but I would also like to point out that it is not a welcoming place.

He simply ignored the rules, the rules are listed on the right-side. I updated them now to make it more visible and clear.

Also it appears I am not able to comment or vote on comments of comments of posts created by other people entirely like in this thread https://lemmy.ml/post/94340

I recommend simply informing other users of their doings if you feel awareness needs to be spread about something. If you can create a master list for exposing purposes, even better.

Be creative. You can also talk to admins.

Edit: Just to be clear, this is a generic comment and not an attack on @CHEFKOCH@lemmy.ml in any hinted way.

Ngl this seems more like an issue of culture than of technical features. Like I said in the matrix chat about this, if a block feature allows a user to continue commenting on another user’s posts after being blocked, that block feature is broken and it will be taken advantage of by harassers. I know that from experience running an instance with a high number of marginalized users and a couple bigots with way too much time on their hands to spam new accounts. I want to specify that it doesn’t seem like you’ve harassed anyone here. I’m just saying that these are the sorts of situations the feature is intended for and breaking the feature is likely not the solution.

Is it safe to say the underlying issue here is that a user is spending way more time here than most people and is using that to throw their weight around? Because that’s an issue that happens just about everywhere online. Social media is by its nature manipulatable and the more attention someone has to dedicate, the easier that process is

So you think that anyone who blocks anyone which also prevents them from posting elsewhere is a good model? That basically excludes anyone they want from the discussion. Yes it can be seen as a culture thing but IMO that’s a cop out. This place is supposed to be better than reddit (i assume) so why are we still falling into the same ol habits?
