First time i heard about that, but it seems you are right (though search only gives me stats for the united states). More importantly, it was mentioned that Delta would be more dangerous, but at least in my country, the number of cases has been relatively low since september.

Many countries are still struggling while the measures taken would probably have gotten rid of the original variant by now.
