They get 90% of their equipment from unsold/excess military equipment through something called the 1033 program.

Military industrial complex satisfies ridiculously unnecessary equipment orders that never get used so it then just gets funneled to law enforcement.

They then sell the surplus to the police departments around the country leading to the militarization of the police as a side effect of protecting the capital/investment of the companies that made the equipment.

Oh and one of the stipulations is that they don’t get to keep the equipment unless they deploy it once a year apparently so they look for any excuse to role it out.

That I’m not sure on, but it would track with how many military grade assault rifles seem to have proliferated amongst American private gun owners.

So were the US military personnel in Afghanistan.

If we need to engage the US police in armed conflict in our lifetimes, it is good to utilize asymmetric warfare strategy. Asymmetric warfare is is the type of war conducted against an opponent who vastly overpowers you in technology, resources, etc.

If the enemy goes high tech, you go low tech. If the enemy advances, you withdraw. If the enemy occupies, you harass. If the enemy is monitoring cell phones, don’t use cell phones.

Sure, the police might be suited up in $35k of weapons and armor, but you can nullify all of that with a $25 pipe bomb. Also not all police are armed like that all the time. Some good first targets in a violent revolution would be some small town municipal centers, you know, the kinds of towns with only a few thousand people and they just combine the police department with some bureaucrat building. A town of 2k people might only have 4 or 5 pigs on payroll, and not all of them will be working at the same time. A bomb and a quick 3-5 minute or less post boom raid can cripple that town’s ability to deploy pigs and also might gain you some weapons and armor for the comrades. Then scatter and let nearby cities and sheriff departments waste resources sending a bunch of people. When the enemy occupies, you harass. When the enemy advances, you withdraw.

I just encountered one of these G.I. cops at my local convenience store. He was wearing a camo baseball cap and half of his gear looked like a soldier’s. As I was walking out he said (paraphrased) ‘It’s good walking up here this morning, isn’t it? Nice and cool.’ I gave a sarcastic ‘mmhmm’ and ignored him (until he raised his voice…to somebody in the parking lot).

I wasn’t expecting to see one of these in person. It’s almost like we have dozens of little boys around dressed up like U.S. soldiers and pretending that they’re occupying Iraq. It’s surreal.
