    My in-laws recently replaced their overly manicured lawn with a lawn composed of a soft ground cover. It grows to a certain height and then just stops, so mowing isn’t a thing. They only mow it when they are about to have people over for croquet, which is what the lawn had mainly been used for.

        True. I didn’t fully explain it. It flowers so bees love it, it doesn’t need as much water as grass, and I think it doesn’t require all the herbicide. Sure it’s not ecologically perfect, but if you want a lawn available then it is a least-bad option. They also do a lot of other gardening and such that is of benefit to the local fauna.
