A German Court from Munich has ordered a website owner to pay a penalty of €100 for migrating personal data of users. The owner has leveraged the IP address of the users via Google Fonts library without the user's consent.
Title is misleading. Fonts won’t be shipped by the host or installed in your browser. I
They’ll just make a cookie consent banner and if you don’t agree, you won’t get the font. And because blocking fonts means to “break” websites, you’ll consent. In the end you are just annoyed by GDPR.
indeed, the title is missleading.
it’s illegal to embed fonts without a porper consent.
And because blocking fonts means to “break” websites, you’ll consent.
that would be another clear violation, of Recital 42 5 EU GDPR:
“Consent should not be regarded as freely given if the data subject has no genuine or free choice or is unable to refuse or withdraw consent without detriment.”
I’m no lawyer, but that wording tends to indicate that the free choice doesn’t result in your electricity being turned off at the meter or your junk rotting off.
They have no legal obligation to make their website look good (or even legible) to you simply because of the GDPR.
