  • I can try my hand at these once I have little bit of time :) Olympus has their JPG algorithms very well tuned, they do not set the bar low! Here are some tips:

    • Turn on capture sharpen (it’s under demosaicing, give them a little bit of boost)
    • You might also want to turn on diffuse or sharpen module and use something like sharpen demosaicing / AA Filter preset
    • For photos like these where they’ve been shot (looks like) from a distance, there’s atmospheric haze, you might want to turn on “haze removal” module and see if you like the results
    • I’m using a preview version of Darktable that has AGX -module (which I use instead of filmic or sigmoid) and I like the results contrast / saturation -wise but you might need to wait for a bit until it’s in the official release, until then I recommend using sigmoid
    • I have my own 3D Luts I use for colors but to get somewhat closer to Olympus colors you could use “Rgb Primaries” module and tweak every hue little bit right (somewhat more for the green one) and add some color purity for each one of them (again somewhat more to the green one)
    • For the shots at ISO 800 I’d enable denoise (profiled)
    • After that I usually play around with “color balance rgb” (and maybe tone equalizer) if I still need more relighting / contrast / saturation work done

Once you get a basic set of corrections you think might benefit most of the images, create a new style and try applying that to more photos and see if it works… and tweak it along. It’s less exhausting to edit when you get a basic style down that provides a better starting point. Darktable may be a bit intimidating because of the berth and depth but you’ll get there eventually and you’ll be flying through edits :) (Also, don’t forget to hotkey stuff that you notice you use a lot, like cropping etc.)

Oh, almost forgot: if you want to see cool edits using Darktable I recommend watching some videos from Boris Hajdukovic.

  • And the “best” part? I’ve sometimes checked what happened to the godawful bosses that literally bankrupted promising companies and were all kinds of incompetent assholes… well, they got into bigger and bigger companies! I’m sure they’re doing stellar job there too… why would they otherwise be paid big bucks? We’re playing a rigged game and pretending it makes sense… and we’re supposed to accept that that’s “just how the world works”.

  • Sometimes I say that there are “nice photos” and “good photos”. A nice photo is usually one which is technically good (focus, sharpness, composition, post processing etc.) and it’s pleasant to look at. Properties of good photos are much more difficult to nail down because they often break “rules” intentionally and they’re so varied… but they make you feel and/or think.

I remember that exact same verse! I had had multiple traumatic happenings in life and tried to study Bible to soothe my mind and find some answers. I read the whole thing and hoo boy was it eye-opening! I tried reading apologetics to allay my doubts but they seemed like dodging the questions and didn’t provide satisfying answers. Then I started reading stuff with historical critical approach and it started to make sense. I fell away from Christianity. Then I read other “holy” scriptures just make sure I wasn’t missing something and realized that they all had cool stories but that’s about it. So, I decided to rebuild my world view on something that wasn’t based on wishful thinking… and I’ve been a content atheist for 15 years.

I have ADHD too and in those few high stress / life or death situations I’ve been in, I suddenly felt super calm and focused while some other people were just screaming. I read somewhere that people with ADHD are overrepresented in first responders and similar jobs and I can believe that.

That being said, I very much agree with JackByDev. Yeah, ADHD is a disability. It has caused much pain and suffering for me and I wish I could get rid of it.

  • I run Linux on all home computers, MacOS on work devices… if AMD’s 8x40 APU turns out about as good as it’s rumoured to be (efficiency-wise) I’ll probably try to get my company to get me a Framework laptop with that and then all will be well.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure Steam Deck is having an effect here. Not only do they seem to sell well on their own but people may get ideas when they see Linux-based device running games decently…

Depends on conditions and what kind of birds but you’d need a pretty long lens (like in 300mm-600mm range), decent autofocus and enough image quality to resolve feather detail… it’s pretty tall order for a phone. I hear some people like Moment add-on lenses on their phones but I don’t think they make long telephoto lenses. Most of the long lens add-ons I’ve seen are of really questionable quality…

  • Back in the day Discord’s advantage was that it provided a way for people to set up a voice communication server with push-to-talk without any technical knowledge and for free. I don’t know how they’re ahead of competition now… I don’t know what their killer features are.

I use it occasionally but there are a few problems that always drive me away . 1) I have muted all the servers but I still get occasional sound notifications and just cannot find any source for them, might be a bug 2) there is no global notification history. To me that seems like a must-have feature and I don’t know how people stand to use discord without it 3) ui feels very clunky. To me it seems like I spend way too much time navigating through the ui and searching for things. For example, scrolling through the servers and trying to remember which icon was which. Anyway, I would be interested in hearing why people do use it besides everybody being there.

Well, maybe my perspective is skewed because metal music is popular around here in Finland and “everybody” knows Children of Bodom, Opeth and Amorphis, many know Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquility, Amon Amarth. But most have never even heard the name Be’lakor…

For me, it depends on where the crunch is… like HERO is pretty crunchy but it’s very front-loaded and it’s pretty smooth during the play. Also it’s a bit different these days because I play most of my games through Foundry VTT which takes care of a lot of crunch if the support is good… That said, I’m leaning toward more narrative systems these days, not because of lack of crunch but because I think they make better use of TTRPGs’ advantages (over say computer rpgs) and because it’s easier to model characters and stories in them. I think I’d really like a narrative crunchy game :D
