These kinds of takes are only possible by hyper-individualized westerners, who have to completely ignore the success of China’s lockdowns (and their extremely low death rates because of it), and exclude it from their analysis.

I don’t exclude China’s successes. But you are nuts if you think that could work in the US. What China did was incredible. Lockdown for 2 weeks to stop the spread, ensuring zero covid. Then for the rest of the pandemic, everyone can go to concerts and water parks in crowds.
What you got in the US was administrative frustration that the social fabric of the US was not more cohesive, so they decided to punish EVERYONE for it by locking down for a year, even though no one is at fault, it’s just the system.
