Just to let you guys know, we just merged the PR that allows a Discourse category to follow any actor in the fediverse, including other Discourse categories. Yes, that means you can now federate a category between two (or three, or more) Discourses. There’s a few more PRs in the pipeline as part of this phase, but that was a big one. This is unfortunately not true. The Protocol is big enough and non-specific enough that two platforms can both use it and not be able to work with each other. In the case of mastodon and Lemmy this is effectively the case at the level of facilitating communities across both platforms. Information can get across, like this right now, but it’s tricky to use and understand and fraught with problems such that mass uptake not hasn’t happened it’s probably not to be recommended.

Lemmy and Mastodon speak the exact same protocol. As soon as one works, there should be nothing preventing the other from working aswell.
