This would definilty be more interesting if there was Lemmy interop. I guess only a question of time.

Lemmy and Mastodon speak the exact same protocol. As soon as one works, there should be nothing preventing the other from working aswell.

This is unfortunately not true. The Protocol is big enough and non-specific enough that two platforms can both use it and not be able to work with each other. In the case of mastodon and Lemmy this is effectively the case at the level of facilitating communities across both platforms. Information can get across, like this right now, but it’s tricky to use and understand and fraught with problems such that mass uptake not hasn’t happened it’s probably not to be recommended.

I purposely posted the top post from mastodon to lemmy because I care about these issues, but I had to work out how it works to do that.

Well, no one seems to be implementing groups over the protocol because they’re aiming for mastodon support, so it’s gonna be like this for a while it seems

EDIT: which is kinda insane when it comes to federating a forum. How does that makes sense in anyway other than through groups?! Like, I’m betting this federation plug-in isn’t useful outside of discourse unless/until it works with lemmy/groups … in much the same way lemmy isn’t very useful on mastodon.

Wordpress federation is kinda similar IMO just less so with their choice of being a “user” rather than a “group”.

But all together, we’re seeing a flattening of what ActivityPub is capable of as everyone aims for Mastodon’s limited take on the fediverse.

    Pretty cool!

Seems a little rough around the edges still w.r.t. names. Angus’ external names are different/wrong on the discourse instances. It seems to be federated correctly though as mastodon shows the usual user@domain handle.
