Any difference in security with using a VPS as a VPN vs just using a VPN service?

I’m curious to see what people think about this one. Is there any real benefit from using a VPS as a VPN vs just using a VPN service.

VPS, because only one people use them regularly, is directly tied to them, just with a different IP. However, VPN users can be not so easily identified and targeted by a middle man.
