“The findings, compiled from government sources, mean an average of 12 migrant workers from these five south Asian nations have died each week since the night in December 2010 when the streets of Doha were filled with ecstatic crowds celebrating Qatar’s victory.”
I used to like watching the world cup, but in recent years FIFA has made it clear its just after the money.
Qatar is in no way an adequate country to host a world cup, and this exploitation of immigrants is just another proof of that
Qatar is in no way an adequate country to host a world cup
The death count here may make injustice more “visible”, but destruction/exploitation around huge sports events like world cup and olympic games is a real thing. Entire neighborhoods being torn to pieces or otherwise cleansed and/or military occupied just so people can come and make business… Not sure Qatar is the only problem here.
Capitalism was here
Sad reality is,
- people are still going to watch it no matter what
- Qatar at most gets a slap on the wrist
- FIFA makes even more money
Sad reality is it’s not just about FIFA though. Every industry is pretty much the same, from construction to electronics to agriculture…
