I’m unsure if China should even be called socialist anymore.
That is because you do not understand what being a socialist country implies, and do not understand the Chinese model of socialism. Socialism never opposes to a private sector, in fact this one helps with the growth of the capital of that nation, since it atracts foreign investments. Socialism, e.g. a transitional stage from capitalism to communism, is a period where you are still dealing the social set backs of a capitalist structure, such as welfare inequality, racism, homophobia, and so on, this includes the fact you still have a class based society, which you are trying to abolish. Therefore, socialism implies a proletariat controlled economy where a public sector dominates, and a private sector exists in the benefit of the State, even as far as Marx we can find texts of him alluding to this line of thought, there is one where he states to be in favour of free market because of capitalist contradictions, these very capitalist contradictions are the ones driving industrial powers out of the Western world and into China. If anything, we can conclude China is the most successful socialist project so far.
