    You always see car dealerships do this too, to advertise all the cars they’re not selling. Such a waste of energy and pointless light pollution.

    you still need traffic lights for bikes and public transport that runs across pedestrian or cyclist routes. and i don’t think the wasted light is at all significant enough to put energy into reducing.

    though the image does look very dystopian

      Traffic lights or even street lights (for actual streets) isn’t the issue here, the giant parking lot with hundreds of lights illuminating nothing is the issue.

      It’s not just about the energy usage, although that’s significant both for powering the lights as well as producing and maintaining them. Artificial lights at night mess with all life and we shouldn’t use them to nearly the extent we do.
