You said someone was mentally unstable. That is saneism, a form of ableism directed at the mentally unwell. As a mentally unstable person myself, I don’t find my condition to be related to fascist beliefs at all.

Aside from casting aspersions on mentally unwell people, I think it’s important not to equate fascism and mental instability, as there are plenty of very stable, very calculating people who are pushing fascism.

We can’t fall into the trap of believing fascism is just a mental health problem, that’s rather similar to the refrain of Americans who argue that mental health is the problem leading to gun violence, and not a culture of reinforcing the dehumanization of others and glorifying oppressive violence.

Obviously you can respond to stuff like this however you want (and let me be clear, I absolutely agree that the post in question was just. . . not anything. An article whose source was trust me bro? ooookay) but it’s not surprising your comment was removed, and in the end it didn’t help to explain to the confused onlooker why the article wasn’t worth anyone’s time.

I can’t argue that the post was almost certainly not linked to in good faith, and the poster was definitely not going to be interested in hearing counter-points, but I try my best to remember that the comments aren’t for convincing the poster (not worth it, as you said) but to convince the onlooker who’s silently scrolling through conversations about topics they don’t understand.

Those are the people we can reach and teach. Though, of course, in the process we’re likely to get a lot of bad faith responses that will trouble our blood pressure, so, y’know, pick your battles.
