Sometimes I feel like an alien living here. People will say vile, racist shit about Chinese people and not even bat an eye. Many westerners do not view them as human.
I try to take them through a journey of their own beliefs. Why do they think like this? The answer is mostly because of the media.
Then I try to get some logic in their heads. Do you really think the entire country of China, with a population of 1.4 billion people, is brainwashed to the point of having no opinion and blindly following orders? Or do you think like that because of the media? Most likely they see my point from here on.
Then I go on to explain a bit about the form of government China has and what their vision for the future is, and how it contradicts Western views of the future. This gives an explanation for why the media do the things they do. They usually get me after this, and in most cases people reform their opinion of China after a conversation like this.
It doesn’t excuse the dumb shit they scream in the first place, but in my experience people do understand what I try to say about China this way. Even about very loaded topics like the Uyghurs.
I try this every now and then, but most people are extremely overconfident and will treat you like you’re stupid if you say anything positive about China.
Even so-called “socialists.”
