    In the past it was called feudalism, with the difference that people were called plebs and now they are called consumers.

      Late stage capitalism certainly does bear more than a passing resemblance to feudalism. Ownership is concentrated with a handful of oligarchs, and everybody else owns practically nothing. Even things like media, cars and appliances are slowly turning into rentals. Everything is a subscriptions service nowadays, and once you stop paying the company takes your toys away.
