Modern depictions of MLK are pretty fictional too, tbh.

The GF shooting scene wasn’t even enough, they had to go with the “actually, look at how inherently evil he is if given the opportunity” in What If…?, while simultaneously promoting T’Challa more in the same series (the guy who tamed Thanos). Never mind the question of “Well, isn’t at least one multiversal copy going to be evil?” as they dug into with Doctor Strange, but Jesus fucking Christ they won’t let it go that people liked Killmonger more. They even did more redemption for fucking Thanos in that series.

EDIT: Just…imagine making a movie featuring elements that would appeal to a black demographic, admitting shit sucks for black people in the US, then not entirely enjoying that, as a result, they relate to and thus like the villain with a shitty childhood and rags-to-riches story bent on liberation more than the “born with a silver spoon in his mouth” monarch from nonexistent scifi-land that was never colonized (unlike the rest of the continent, meaning they stood by and watched passively). Reality beats utopian idealism once again. You can’t make Killmonger look bad, you just can’t. Any attempt looks dishonest.
