I have an integrated gpu that lets me run most games, and it does not heat up like a furnace.

Yeah, it kind of feels like GPUs have gone way beyond what normal consumers need, probably due to crypto mining, machine learning and live streaming requiring that much power.

Might also be due to the Nintendo Switch still offering a platform that gamedevs want to target, which can’t do hyper-detailed graphics.

A lot of devs are looking to cross-platform with mobile now, too.

SteamDeck is probably on many developers mind as well. Valve really need to focus on battery life (the only negative imo) and I don’t see that happening by improving overall hardware power use for better performing chips.

Furthermore, both apple and microsoft are now shifting their hardware platform focus to ARM.

things are shifting away from the top end raw power. so it makes a lot of sense, really.

I think the other great thing about the Steam Deck is that it shows that a cheap SoC with integrated graphics can be a competitive gaming chip.

Ehhh, while I’d love to see more highly efficient GPUs, he’s talking about the max tdp which is the highest wattage the card can pull. It still uses minimal power (not exactly sure what that is, and the author never says) at idle.

Also the max tdp of the new ryzen chips really isn’t that high (190w) for a high performance CPU.
