We have Matrix rooms (here and here) where we talk about anything from communism to any kind of hobby you might have, I think joining there would be a good idea, then there’s also this Lemmy community called !comradeship@lemmygrad.ml which was created with the intent of socializing amongst comrades.
Particularly, the best way I managed to get some online friends is through video games, since it provides a nice activity to interact with people and making conversation easier, in my opinion.

I’m not saying you have to play chess, I’m saying that not all popular video games need expensive equipment. If you’re even interested in games, that is.
There’s this video game called Meridian 59 which was the first 3D MMORPG which looks pretty similar to Doom, a few years ago the game was open sourced and it is now free on Steam (back in the day you’d have to pay a subscription to play it, similar to WoW), and there are people playing it. So yeah, there are a lot of options when it comes to video games.
