Seems like there’s suddenly a lot of shills for other platforms here.
We should form our own propaganda. Not as a counterpoint, but as part of a wider fediverse identity.
But to successfully do this without being grouped together with one of the more mainstream platforms, it will have to be one so far removed from established axis’ of alignments:
- Impossible to place on left vs right.
- Impossible to compared with authoritarianism vs democracy
- Cannot be tied to a specific geopolitical agenda
- cannot align with a specific country’s interests
How about this: “Sasquatch did 9/11 to distract us from the fact that Big Farming puts nutrients in our food, and the Dutch lgbtq communities are the only one who can save us”

I believe Pixelfed Loops is the only one currently, it’s actually not half bad, apart from how barebones and stuttery the app is, which isn’t a big deal since the issues are only occasional.
I don’t understand it at all. I find it infuriating. I need long videos to play in the background while I work. I can’t get anything done with this short crap. Maybe that’s the point…
Short-form videos, like many things in modern society (e.g. many video games) are essentially just a Skinner Box. You scroll, watch the video, get a hit of pleasure, and then the video automatically replays. That cues you to scroll. Repeat. It’s easy to get stuck in that loop, especially if you already are struggling with executive dysfunction and can’t find motivation/pleasure in ordinary activities.
I guess I just don’t get the hit of pleasure from it. I feel like I’m just getting into whatever it is and then it blue-balls me.
I mean, that’s just two different purposes of two different formats.
Short form content is not made to be played in the background while you work, nor is it made for intricate and detailed analysis or essays. It’s made to have something occupy your mind during short breaks like toilet or smoke break or while waiting for the bus or something.
Long and short form content don’t compete but compliment with each other. If you don’t like one or the other, that’s totally fine, then you’re just not part of the target audience.

From my time on Lemmy. There seems to be a lot of American propaganda on here from people.
Sometimes I don’t know if it’s propaganda or some inferiority complex because I’ve seen some propaganda from my country (MX) and if I try to go against it I get downvoted constantly (a lot less since I joined an instance that blocked ml, grad and hex) by people adamant into telling me how they lived here for a while, they have family here or how I am ignorant about that country, like… removed, everyone in my family has lived here for 3 generations at least, don’t come here to tell me how things work when I have to deal with the consequences of a kakistocracy that keeps shitting on everything.
A lot of the fediverse users just have to be right when it comes to politics… And vaping, don’t you dare have questions or doubts about vaping because they get mad.I see a lot of Chinese propaganda as well

I think we just have a surprising amount of political staffers in Lemmy. The bulk does seem to be wealthy people living in suburbs. Look at how the biggest groups are people self hosting thousands and thousands of dollars of equipment.

From my perspective (being not from the US) us-american arrogance is very present on lemmy.
Those aren’t mutually exclusive; “American indoctrination.” is the reason so many lemmitors disagree with such extreme views as “sending weapons that prolong war is bad for the people who will suffer the effects of those weapons, mostly civilians”, “supporting al-nusra is bad”, “we shouldn’t put tariffs on EVs and solar panels”, or “the chinese government having your data is less of a threat to you than the american government having your data”
We already have American censorship on the top ones, which will get worse once Project 2025 is enacted…
Yes and no, you still have admins here, just like on Reddit, you can get locked out of interacting with thousands of people at the whim of your instance’s admin and the only recourse you’ll have is to join another one instead…

“The only recourse you’ll have” is the whole point. You have no recourse on Reddit. There is no other Reddit server. There are many Lemmy servers, all over the world, with very different views and policies.
And you’re just jumping from one instance to another with admins that can censor you again and again. You create your own instance and other instances’ admins can censor you by defederating from your own instance.
Just out of curiosity, what’s your solution?

Basically, decentralize the back-end independently of the front-end, eliminate admins altogether, mods still exist but they only have power on their communities, they don’t have site wide power.
That wouldn’t work that well, especially when you take law into regard. For example, the european Digital Services Act regulates platforms and platforms have to respond to obligations, sometimes deleting content. Communities are not platforms, instances are. Ergo, you need instance admins be able to comply and respond to the DSA.
The server owners would take care of the content hosted on their server and would need to filter it based on their local laws (to remove CSAM for example, just like current admins need to do), but otherwise this type of decentralization would make the website pretty much a neutral zone that operates outside of specific laws since the people hosting the content (and its backups) could be located all over the world.
How’s that different from now?
Or do you want users to not be banned instancewide for breaking instance rules? Or do you want to abolish instance/server rules aside from local laws altogether?
Not that lemmy isnt free, but just about every instance aside from .world is very left wing, and even here on world just about everyone hates right leaning people.

Fediverse: extremely USA-centric, extremely left and queer. Dissent is punished as hard as posting Winnie Pooh on TikTok.
But it’s not usually the people running the platform doing that. You can also find instances that go full on 4chan style freeze peach and only delete explicitly illegal stuff, but most of those are probably defederated from the big instances by now.
Downvotes hurt, I get it. But remember, it’s only an attempt to remind you you’re an asshole. It’s up to you whether you believe them or not.
How does that work here anyway? Is there a FAQ or something to explain? Do downvoted comments get hidden or pushed down?
Not as far as I can tell. It’s really just an indicator “some people thought your comment was dogshit”. Whether you take it seriously is up to you.
