I’m going to be spending most of December in Ho Chi Minh City. I’m so excited! Has anyone been there or is anyone from there? I need advice and recommendations for things to try and do. Should I rent a bike or will that be suicide for a foreigner?

Hello everyone

I just got a job and I’ll be starting next week. I’m so excited to have some savings 😭

A homeless man died this night in my city. He died laying outside the central station, one of the busiest parts of the city with people passing by 24/7.

You can die, just like that. Cold, alone and yet surrounded by others.

I’m going to be without a functional computer for a little over a week, I’m afraid. It’s ten times harder to work through my smartphone, so I’ve been sharing @yogthos@lemmygrad.ml’s topics on Canada’s profascist shenanigans to capitalismindecay as substitutes for my more elaborate threads.

It’s a new week and I started off pretty shit. I don’t really feel motivated to do something, came in late at work and had very little patience for our clients. It got better throughout the day but still.

Someone is giving me their binoculars so I can take my new bird watching hobby to the next level. I managed to spot wild parrots in the yards of our block last weekend and that was pretty wild as they aren’t a native species.

I hope I can make something out off this week.

Seems like the drug war is heating up again in the city. Multiple grenade explosions in the past few days, a shooting in broad daylight close to a school the other day. A judge getting threatened. Some dudes threw some molotovs into a supermarket tonight. Never a dull moment over here.

I was gifted this book called ‘Poverty explained to people with money’ (translated from Dutch) which I guess is flattering if they think I have money lol

It’s sort of interesting though so far it has an underlying tone of ‘we must be aware of the poors so we can save them’

Winter has finally showed up here, alarmingly late really, but god damn do I hate it. Doesn’t matter how many years I’ve lived in this city winter is always worse than I remember. Already dying for it to be summer again.

A thought about imperialism and logistics:

Imperialism has to hurt its own “allies” to recruit them. Whether in a more literally meaning of conscription or hurting them by shaping and socializing them into monsters.

Anti-imperialism doesn’t strictly speaking need to recruit. In some sense, the most imperialized peoples are drafted into resistance by nature of being targeted by imperialism.

Bit reductionist, since obviously logistics, organizing, spreading propaganda still matter to anti-imperialism. But the point is, they’re not having to dehumanize people or do herculean persuasion to get them to pick up arms. They’re recruiting from people who want to keep their people and their humanity intact, some of whom will be eager to rise to the occasion.

Imperialism still tries to present its cause as righteous anyway, but the realities of it will be felt. Imperialism will always have an uphill battle in this way, maintaining itself.

I’m not sure if this is one of those thoughts that is profound or a long way around to pointing out the very obvious. I’m in one of those states of mind, I can’t tell right now.
