Here is what i suspect happened there: a couple of enterprising Chinese academics/businessmen with little or no relation to the government knowing exactly what westerners wanted to hear at that time, decided to invite some gullible westoids to these “conferences”, charging of course a hefty fee of entrance for the privilege to hear this “secret insider information” about the imminent collapse of China. Westerners loved it as it played right into their “end of history” delusions, and their hosts made off with a bunch of westoid cash. I believe this is known as the “sigma grindset”.
