I am struggling with decision paralysis trying to choose an instance. I’ve never been on Mastodon before.
I am tired of euro-centric and US-centric Internet spaces, but still enjoy the international aspect. Are there any instances with decent international presence?
If you mean non-eurocentric, non-US-centric ones:
- https://mastodon.la/ is a Latin American instance
- https://mast.dragon-fly.club/about is a Chinese one
- https://pawoo.net/ is a Japanese one. There are plenty of Japanese Misskey instances too
- https://twingyeo.kr/ is a Korean one
If you mean having people from many places, pretty much all instances I know are hosted by Europeans or USian, but have members from elsewhere.
On Pleroma, it doesn’t matter much. There is less connection between instance members on Pleroma in my experience, since the instance timeline contains not only their posts, but also their replies to other.
The only thing about self hosting is recruiting people otherwise you’re posting to an empty room. Sorry I don’t have a suggestion but unless you really want to self host to learn I would find a server that suits you first then maybe peel some folks off to your own server.
If I self host, can’t I do it as a single user instance? Is cross instance discovery not good in its current state?
You can easily deliver/receive content using relay. I also host a intance for myself and people see my posts in federated timeline, and follow if they want to

That’s disappointing. But isn’t it Mastodon compatible? I was thinking to host pleroma if I do end up self hosting, as I read its lighter. Would that be a bad idea?

Maybe https://instances.social/ can help you to find a suitable instance.
If you want to self-host I would recommend Pleroma over Mastodon. As you already mentioned in the other comment, Mastodon is really resource heavy while Pleroma easily runs on a cheap SoC.

This one is hosted in Mexico: https://mstdn.mx/about At this time it is not advisable to use NATO-centered spaces, they could be taken down by their philonazi lackey governments. It’s hard to say, but the neutrality that existed in the european cyberspace is officially over.
Now to go underground.
