Looks like Apollo is now dead boys and girls. Feels like having a loved one die
I haven’t processed what it means yet. I’m still at the first stage of grief.
I was shot down mid-scroll. Brutal.
Holy crap… That is brutal.
I was in the middle of switching over to Lemmy. Honestly I’m really enjoying it so far.
I tried to use the official reddit app and it was horrible. So I’m trying out Lemmy. The look and feel on Lemmy mobile app (Jerboa) is so similar to Reddit is Fun.
I’m using wefwef.app and so far it’s like 90% of the way to an Apollo clone. Now we just need more users, communities, and content.
Tell all your friends! Wait, we’re all redditors. Shit…
Want to know what’s worse? According to The Verge, /u/iamthatis told them it was Reddit who pulled the plug earlier than planned.

(Lemmy gif test, take #1)
ETA so far wefwef.app feels like a great Apollo clone. No push notifications on iOS (yet?) but I added it to my Home Screen and it’s great.
To get push notification, something needs to ping the server now and then in order to check if there’s any update to push you. This is why Apollo ultra had a cost to it. I’d imagine eventually the self hosted version of wefwef can get push… public instance not so sure.
We have push notifications for Memmy! wefwef is quite nice though, i have it installed too

I’m sad now :( I’ll be even sadder tommorow once it sinks in
Same dude. It didn’t have got to me how to live without RIF, so I’m still treating it like a momentary shutdown
mfs need to touch some grass asap 💀
I’ve been processing since this was first announced. I bounce back and forth between depression and acceptance.

Man I stopped using Reddit from day 1 of the protests. It’s given me time to let go.

When this saga began, I didn’t think I’d be struggling with such a sense of disconnect with the loss of an app of all things. However, I do feel that Christian’s eulogy for Apollo helped, a gentle reminder to “smile because it happened”. Here’s to moving on.
I’ll say here what I said there -
“This is like seeing someone steal the motorhome you’ve had tons of adventures and experiences in, and roll it over the edge of the Grand Canyon as you watch helplessly. It’s not just the loss of your comfy, customized motorhome, it’s all of the feelings and memories that are attached to it.”
So at the moment my “workflow” is to completely stop accessing Reddit via mobile apps. I’ll still use Reddit via Google Searches because it remains important for finding key information.
I’m content playing with Lemmy as my main mobile “app”.
Install https://libredirect.github.io/ to not give them any money lol
Is Teddit and Libreddit going to keep working through this?
Old.reddit would not show comments anymore. It will direct you to reddit.
So I believe they might stop working at any moment.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Oh this is awesome! I was wondering how I’d manage without the ol’ browser searches
On iOS I sideload Reddit+ with AltStore (no jailbreak needed). It gets rid of all the ads, promoted content and whatnot. Other than that, I also use Inoreader app with the RSS.
I feel like Lemmy will only grow from here.
So many old subs have popped up and become properly active.
I find that a lot of Lemmy people are positing a vision that won’t exist, which is that there’s going to be a great migration to Lemmy. I don’t think that’s going to happen.
But the key is that you don’t need the hundreds of millions that Reddit has. You can argue that you don’t even want it.
What I want is a return to the 2000-era bulletin board-type numbers where each community would have on the order of a few hundred or thousand active participants.
The thing is, I suspect the Fediverse could do both.
There might one day be giant single instances, that are in themselves, a reddit, but also tiny ones with tiny communities just doing their own thing.
I don’t think Lemmy or the fediverse will go down anytime soon, but I’m not imagining some sudden spike of explosive growth beyond what we’ve already seen. I don’t think anyone does.
We’re just optimistic about the future of this incarnation of social media!
There’s so much community knowledge on reddit, it’s kinda painful to see everyone deleting all their historical comments and posts.
I get it, but still that’s information presumably lost forever.
What is information archival on the Fediverse like? Is there any advantage to Reddit?
Also if I understand last discussions, it’s not clear how well the Fediverse currently behaves with Google searches.
RIF is as well. Sad times and stuff but I’m happy to be here instead.
GOAT app. Don’t have the heart to remove it from my phone
Me either. It’s just gonna sit there on my phone, having a well earned rest. Sleep well RIF.
Same. Will wait a few more weeks just out of respect :(
Sync dead too.
Just opened Sync because “I wanted to use it for one last time” and was hit with the 404… So sad to see a good app vanish like that…
But I’m glad we’re getting Sync for Lemmy at the same time.
I just used it for the last time I think. But I think we are into only minutes left…
RIF just started returning error 429 as well. I sadly uninstalled it and then launched Jerboa instead.
I’ve had a ton of issues with Jerboa, but thus far Connect for Lemmy is working well!
Yeah… instant crashing. It’s a weird feeling.
Yup. It’s done. No more. Wow…. Well HELLLOOOOOOO LEMMMMINGS!!!
The end of an era
BaconReader is out
10 years on it for me. Hope there’s a Lemmy app or theme etc to replicate the feeling
pours one out 😢
Just replaced my launcher icon for RIF with Liftoff
End of an era. Apollo joins Alien Blue in app heaven. RIP.
My 12 year old account has joined them there. It looks like my time on Reddit is over.
That’s my cue. Account of almost 13 years, deleted.
I happened to join Reddit mere months before Apollo. All I knew was Apollo. I tried to view Reddit through alternate means, and it just doesn’t feel right.
For what it’s worth, wefwef (wefwef.app) feels a little like Apollo and has made me moving over here a bit easier…
It’s still in beta but mlem seems to be basically copying Apollo. It’s a marine app instead of a web app. Missing some important features at the moment but worth keeping an eye on.
I meant native app not marine app lol we’re still missing editing with it’s unfortunate since apple’s keyboard hates me.
Wefwef has been impressing me for a web app, although the bar isn’t that high. The web app makes it accessible without Testflight and quicker to push live, making adoption quicker.
