Going to miss this app
man, this is bullshit
I don’t get it. “Reddit killed our app, so come talk to us on Reddit.”.
“our community continues to thrive” even though we’ll have nothing to talk about.
Folks round here do need to understand though that there’s really not likely to be all that big an influx of people on the first. Reddit has far, far more inertia than the Lemmy community likes to imagine. This is a great example.
You aren’t wrong, but there are some of us who just made the jump to using Lemmy more ”seriously" because of the good bye message. I’ll probably stick to reddit on my computer, but stick to Lemmy on my mobile.
Death (to reddit) by a thousand cuts, you know?
I only browsed on the app so thats it for me. The difference here is there isn’t a doomscroll or ragebait algorithm controlling my content.
Oh, you blocked The donald? well here’s the lstest news of him, and here’s some matt walsh drinking his own piss and tim pool xhumming it up with nazis…
Only app I was able to use. Waiting for a LiF clone.
Jerboa is really jank still but is headed in that direction.
Well, JerboaIsNotYetFunToUse =P
Just from the look of it, Thunder seemed very RIF-like. Last I saw TalkLittle was making an app for Tildes, no indication that he’s working on a Lemmy app sadly.
I have Jerboa, Liftoff, and Thunder installed. They all have different bugs or issues…what bothers me a lot currently is not being able to hold on an image and do copy image for instant paste, without download -_-
It is also not easy to open the current post/comment/whatever in a browser.
After so many years, the way RIF works is just second nature.
The website actually uses these words… “Formerly known as reddit is fun.” Feels like a hint that it’s not going completely away but possibly morphing into LiF… At least that’s what I’d like to think:-)
Talklittle responded on my post under Reddit migration, seems he’s not working on anything specific, but is anticipating Sync for Lemmy
RiF was all I used on mobile. Very sad to see it go. Reddit is dead to me. I hate them now and don’t see myself going back.
Why does the internet have to be so shit now adays
Why does the internet have to be so shit now adays
Cory explains it better than I can
Same. The official app was so clunky and always crashing. I saw a recommendation for rif and never looked back. Without rif, I wouldn’t have even bothered to sign up for reddit.
I logged back into rif on Wednesday for the first and last time since the boycott, to say goodbye to my friends in a private sub and put a “screw you spez” message as my flair on the biggest public sub I post in. Unfortunately I was the only one in the private sub not willing to put up with spez’s crap, so they won’t be recreating it on another platform. Thank you, spez, for taking that away from me.

So sad. This was my go to app when I used Android.
Rif has had a huge impact on the development of my brain growing up. For better or for worse. Rip rif
The first Reddit app I used. All good things must come to an end, I suppose. :(
This was the only reddit app I ever used and I refuse to use any other, so I guess that’s it for me
Same. Quitting RIF is basically quitting Reddit for me 🥲
Same. I uninstalled it when the blackout started. Thank you RIF is fun Golden Platinum.
I used Sync and luckily the dev is making a Lemmy client, maybe the RIF one will eventually too?
Very sad, I used this app daily for over 10 years. I didn’t even had the premium version, I also never logged in, I just lurked there for countless days. It may not be the prettiest app, but it works just perfect. Does someone know how I can buy the developers a few coffees? They deserve it.
I bought the premium version when they announced they were shutting down as a thank you. Wish I would’ve done it sooner.
yeah, same here - it was my favorite way to browse reddit, especially after the desktop version got hit with some weird algorithm that caused posts from various subreddits to never show up on the frontpage (despite being popular)
I did the same thing. Been using it damn near a decade, the least I could do is throw them a few bucks
I loved this app when I used an Android and immediately bought premium. Very sad to see it go.
End of an era…
It’s sad. I’ve used a lot of different reddit apps over the years. Used pretty much all of them at least once.
Related to another Reddit app, but not RIF:
The Relay for Reddit dev (u/dbrady) is bravely working on Relay. I got an update yesterday. The changelog said “further reduce API calls”. I think he actually wants to make it a paid app, which I’d gladly pay for.
I hate the Reddit change as much as the next guy, but if the Relay dev can actually make a profit from it that’d be awesome. The app cost a one-time $4 or something, which I’m sure he never made bank with. Having like $3-5/month for it would probably be sustainable.
I appreciate it, and that’s probably the right move. Unfortunately, I know that I wouldn’t want to pay that, knowing that I’d be helping feed Reddit.
My sentiments exactly! The app developers will make the same, all or most of that fee will go straight into reddit’s pockets.
He wasn’t optimistic on being able to make that work, last I heard.
He was initially talking about $3/month, but the issue is that most of the people willing to pay a monthly subscription for Reddit are the heaviest users. So instead of looking at the API usage for the average user, pricing needs to be aimed at the top 10% or 1% of users.
I’m still looking into it, gathering data etc. Unfortunately the average call rates when broken down to the top 2, 5, 10% etc of users is painting a much different picture. This is the cohort of users I would expect to possibly convert to a subscription model and the average rates for those users can be 3,4,5 even 600 hundred calls per day just by the shear amount they use the app. Some of the top users are well over 1000 per day and sometimes over 2000.
So I’m not sure yet. It would probably have to be a usage based subscription model if it was going to be anything and I’m not sure that’s worth doing. I am still looking into it but unfortunately I don’t think my earlier price points will work.
It’s such a big risk too, hoping to set the price point just right to not run up a massive tens of thousands bill in one month, or even hundreds of thousands or millions.
I really hope they properly set up an LLC so that worst case scenario they can bankrupt just the LLC and stiff Reddit on the bill without putting their personal finances at risk.
Relay is the app I use. It’s is beyond awesome. I so wish for Relay for Lemmy. I would gladly pay again.
I will never pay for an app for Reddit. They showed their true colors and they were ugly colors. Like shit brown.
I’ve heard sync for reddit is converting to Lemmy. I’ll give it a go.
I agree. Even if rif were to miraculously come back free, not sure I’d want to go on reddit as long as spez is in charge.
Reddit is Fun Golden Platinum was one of the first android apps I ever paid money for in July of 2010
Does anyone know why they are not migrating?
I haven’t been on Reddit since the end of the 11th.
The dev seems to be working on an app for Tildes.
That was my go to for Reddit, I will miss it dearly as it was my main daily used app
Just scrubbed my account from 2011 - fuck you spez 🙂
Reminder: if you want to clear your account, do it before the API dies. Power delete suite is amazing
PDS doesn’t get rid of everything. PDS and other tools use your profile, specifically the New, Hot, Top and Controversial lists, which are each limited to 1,000 entries. If you have more than like 4,000 comments there are a lot that will be missed.
For example, if you saved a link to one of your older Top comments, you may find that there are several of your replies left behind underneath - comments that are too old, not popular nor controversial enough to appear in your profile lists.
The only way to get everything is to use the files from a GDPR or other data access request. With these links you can access every comment and delete them. Shreddit (the github version, not the pay website) can take these files. However, this most definitely uses the API and will break in 2 days.
And all of this says nothing to the fact that reddit has been restoring edited and deleted comments over the last few weeks. They aren’t bringing back everything, and it happens little by little, but even the stuff PDS deletes keeps popping up every day or so.
