Seriously, what is this?
(hope it’s fake, found it on Instagram and they called it “based”)
Russia is working against the western hegemon of power in several ways, and while that gives them a leg up in the realm of anti-imperialism, don’t forget that the leadership and cultural narrative itself is regressively liberal, capitalist, and very on par with the conservative ideals of right wing/conservative Americans.
Russia is very anti-lgbt and anti-abortion, while holding the Church in fervently high regard. Just from these few aspects, it is pretty obvious why Russia is attempting to appeal to the conservative American base.
What gave you the “very anti-abortion” impression? I do agree that views towards lgbt are neutral at best even in cities that are known for being the best places to be in as an lgbt person in Russia and that the church has way too much funding and influence.
The falling birth rate has been a topic of much importance for the past 40 years in Russia. To capitalists and the army this is a worrying and unacceptable trend, and abortion laws have become a strong target of these woes. In turn public perception has begun to turn against it.
For example, Soviet law post-1955 used to allow abortions in an unlimited capacity, along with the right to sterilization and contraception. Russian law restricted this to 22 weeks in the early 2000’s, then to 12 weeks in 2011. Along with increasing restrictions on sterilization, and giving doctors the right to refuse abortion.
Additionally the Orthodox Church is extremely hostile to the idea of abortion, and is a key figure in fighting against the practice. They hold much sway politically and socially.
Also “neutral at best” is pushing it slightly for lgbt acceptance. It’s more of a “don’t ask don’t tell” type policy, but even in “accepting” cities, if there is anything visibly lgbt about you, prepare to be harassed or assaulted by regular people and the police constantly. It is not a good country in that regard.
I’m hesitant to believe this because why is it for conservative Americans and Canadians specifically.
They are just targeting a demographic that they feel is ripe for milking. The claims are made by a representative of a Russian immigration law firm so it is possible it is a subtle form of advertisement.
Probably just means English speaking
When was this posted? Need to figure out which “Thursday” they mean. Because I went to Ria Novosti website and couldn’t find such a story.
Mind you, journos occasionally publish this kind of stuff and then it goes nowhere. I.e. years ago, there was a story that Russian government would start inviting Boer from South Africa. To help with agriculture expertise and because they were getting oppressed, you see. Nothing has come of it. Journalists lie all the time.

Here’s the archive. To echo comrade Anatolian, I haven’t found anything about this either. Could have been some rando dumbass politician with an off-hand comment, that got blown up. Wouldn’t be the first time
If this is true, leaning into the weirdness which is post-Soviet reality
Before the Ukrainian war, many Polish alt-rights, and religious fundamentalists (they are very common in Poland) pointed to Russia and Putin as “reasonable conservative” and even the last standing of “true European culture” and religion. Alt right clown politicians support Russia very strong (e.g., Janusz Korwin Mikke, Grzegorz Braun). In my (maybe biased) polish perception Russia is now a conservative (thus removed) third world country which is only a shadow of the USSR power. Once leader of emancipation, now bunch of dark minded poor bastards.
For what it is worth, the claim that it is for “conservative” Americans is being said by an immigration lawyer in VISTA Immigration, a Russian law firm specialising in immigration. He said anti-LGBTQ stuff. Nothing was said by any official Russian authority.
At the same time the article was published in RIA Novosti so it’s not like it holds no weight.
I couldn’t find anything about it in RIA website from 11th May.
