The bot is giving away very small amounts but the purpose is to show that it is fast an feeless.

The selling points of nano are that it is

  • fast
  • feeless
  • decentralised
  • enviromentaly friendly (i.e. the network uses very little energy).

Is it true Nano requires you to be running the wallet in order to receive coin (aka no offline recieving)?

That came up in my initial search of it and put me off of the coin.

As far as I can tell the receiving wallet will not receive coins while offline. But any pending transactions will be confirmed when it comes online. So although a block explorer would not have mark the transaction confirmed, you would be able to access the nano after putting the wallet back online.

      From the nano documentation:

The receiver can be offline and safely leave the funds in this state until they are ready to publish a matching block receiving the funds to their account.
