Imo they really did think they were going to accomplish it. Turn the ruble to rubble, defeat the Russian military with a flood of NATO weapons, unite the global south in sanctions, etc.
It’s wishful thinking now, but I believe the west misjudged how powerful they were after decades of blowing up guerrilla fighters and civilians.
Oh yeah I’m sure they thought they’d blow and Russia would collapse like a house of cards, and didn’t even bother thinking up a plan b. Now they’re entering the find out phase of fucking around an finding out.
