So the Russian government is dismantling the Ukrainian power grid with one hand, and helping the EU keep the UAF war machine running with the other. Yeah.

Presumably it’s going to be countries like Turkey, India, and China who are going to resell oil to Ukraine and the west. So, there’s going to be net outflow of money from western economies. This is on top of already difficult economic situation developing here, and especially so in Europe.

The war would obviously end faster if Ukraine was starved for energy entirely, but there isn’t really a practical way to achieve that. Russia can’t really control what other countries do with their oil and gas, so it can’t prevent third party resales short of stopping sales of energy entirely.

This war might well end Europe’s centuries-old status as rentnerstaaten, what a timeline

Yeah, I think that’s a likely outcome. The west being forced to allocate so many resources to Ukraine necessarily means that they start losing grip on their interests in the rest of the world. Meanwhile, countries are now starting to see an alternative to western hegemony and are actively looking for ways to get out from under western oppression. We are living through historical times.

It could theoretically sanction Ukraine but historically sanctions have never really worked (Russia has imported millions if not billions of dollars worth of Western computer chips since February from third-parties in Turkey and China and god knows where else)
