but more realistically, as shitty as google is, I’d prefer it over literally every other big tech corporation at the moment. The loss of google would be a lot worse than the loss of microsoft, facebook, or amazon.

I’d say they’re all equally bad, but that’s just me. Apple is somewhat better in that they don’t really datamine, but their opposition to right to repair and open source are major black marks.

this is probably really dumb to say but

Now that you mention it apple and google are like opposites but if you had a venn diagram the opposite sides would be pretty good. Creating and contributing to/encouraging open source software (even if it is still monopolistic and selective), valuing privacy, experimenting with new ideas even if they aren’t profitable at first, and having services are free or low cost.

obviously this would be difficult or impossible to do irl as a company that big but they both have good things going for them.

Yes, they do. They value privacy so much, they have become filthy rich seeming selling other people’s privacy.

The problem is not only the surveillance, it is also their purpose to manipulate your behaviour.

apple does though (at least to an extent, which is a lot more than every other major tech company)

Apple’s business model is not surveillance capitalism, but they are a big brother watching every app you do and giving all your iCloud files away whenever the FBI has any interest
