Personally, it’s to some degree idealistic – I care less to support software when it supports Microsoft – but to some degree also a matter of privacy:

• Don’t want to go through Microsoft’s tracking every time I read up on that software.
• Not going to create an account there, so can’t file bug reports.
• If I want to tweak some of the code, I can’t contribute that.
