So what we expected finally happened.
Reddit quarantined (and might soon ban) the most active communist subreddit, and one of the very few non-western-supremacist ones left.
We’ve gotten dozens of new applications, and are approving them as quickly as we can.
Here are a few Lemmy mobile apps for Android and iOS, if you prefer using those over the web app.
If you have any questions, or if there’s anything we can help with, new ideas or communities, or anything that can make the transition away from stormfront easier, let us on the mod team know.
Reddit, Silicon valley, surveillance capitalism, bourgeois media, down with them!
Re Discord, I’m in a Marxist bookclub server on discord and people are very hesitant to try anything else. Its kind of disappointing. The owner of the server says it will be fine because it isnt a “community server” but the way discord won’t run without google play services on android concerned the hell out of me, and now I won’tinstall it. Going to try and find communities in federated spaces and elsewhere, and maybe I’m just paranoid, but to me when 1/10 avowed communists cares about privacy and security while the other 9 use reddit, Facebook, twitter, etc., we are one “Palmer Raid” away from serious consequences
convenience beats everything unfortunately, and discord sure is a convenient, well-built tool. it is no wonder people dont want to leave it because all other lads are there. but discord is in league with big tech, and its staff is filled with rather questionable people. i dont want to use it more than i have to, and i know that when shit goes down they will wipe out things they dont like.
i think people are aware that privacy doesnt exist on the modern web, however not many believe that this will ever bite them in the ass, hence why so many are hesitant to make the jump. but i hate to be the one who yells “i told you so”.
consolidation of the internet that happened during mid-late 00s is a goddamn tragedy.
