It’s a technical thing that someone can probably explain in more detail, but once other instances start pointing toward your posts on lemmy.ml or whatever your domain is, then changing your domain later on will break that at minimum (there are probably worse consequences, but like I said I don’t know everything under the hood)

Couldn’t they keep lemmy.ml and redirect it to the new one? This way we can use the new one and nothing will break.
so the choice is either break some older data, or be permanently at the disadvantage of a flagged url?
Idk enough about DNS and reverse proxy but maybe you could set up an alternate domain that redirects to the same exact site?
