Without even getting into how capitalism managed set the planet on fire within two centuries, the center of capitalism has zero incentive to solve any of this, as doing so would mean giving up on the wealth extraction that provides them with their comfortable lifestyle (and power, and much more) in the first place

The only viable way out I see:

  1. Peripheral countries (LatAm, Africa, South East Asia, etc.) form a strong coallition
  2. Immediate statization of natural resources (water, minerals, crops, meat, oil, etc.)
  3. Completely withhold said resources
  4. As a condition for trading said resources, demand billions to trillions in investments from central countries in clean energy, as well as urban infrastructure, no questions asked, with complete transfer of expertise. No promises: only ever provide any amount of resources after concrete investments
  5. Either heavily regulate or outright ban any use of fossil fuels and oil derivates. Each oil trade has to have an express and justifiable destination (e.g.: maybe you need plastic for some kind of medical equipment)

As we approach a more multi-polar world, this becomes becomes ever more likely. There’s absolutely no way in hell we’ll curb global warming otherwise. The center of capitalism will never do anything concrete about it on its own, so the periphery will have to blackmail them into doing anything. This of course won’t be taken lightly, which is why a global coallition against the center of capitalism is necessary.

I know

  • Portuguese
  • English

And I’d really like to learn Spanish, especially because I have the opportunity to become fluent in about a year and a half

I’d also like to learn mandarin but tried so many times and failed at this point that I’m losing hope

Then maybe I wasn’t very lucky with my instance choice (libranet.de), because jfc, doing anything, from sharing a post to simply browsing the timeline, was a chore

This request/discussion pops up every once in a while and it’s sad that it seems to be only ever brought up because people wanna block lemmygrad. This kinda explains the dismissive “just move elsewhere” response we get from the devs everytime

However, there are valid reasons to want to block an instance as an user other than “me no like commis >:(”, such as:

  • I don’t feel comfortable with a foreign instance’s moderation policy or rules, but I don’t have a case for a instance-wide block
  • I’m being targeted by an instance’s users that hasn’t yet been blocked by the admins and they might take a while to make a decision about it
  • I might even just think the instance is suspicious, even if there isn’t any post specifically that warrants an instance-wide block

(EDIT: making clear that I don’t think “I don’t like the contents of the instance” is a valid reason. In all examples I gave above, the possibility of an instance-wide block is open. This is not the case for lemmygrad, as there’s absolutely no reason for it to be blocked instance-wide over here. In this case, I fully agree with the devs: go elsewhere)

There might be other good reasons for blocking a foreign instance, I just took this at the top of my head.

Blocking individual communities just doesn’t cut it either because the point of an instance-block isn’t blocking a set of users. When you choose to block an instance, you’re block the admin and the moderation team, along with the users of that instance. You’re cutting off a server that is governed in a way you personally don’t trust. And I don’t see why that decision should reserved to the site’s admin only.

So, to the devs: I get that you probably don’t want to enable anti-communists to anti-communist in your site, hosted with your money and developed through hundreds of hours of your effort. Honestly, I agree. You don’t pretend to be politically neutral and that’s a good thing (it is, in fact, one of the things I like the most about Lemmy). But I think, in this specific case, you should reconsider.

Just saying “yeah, we’re definitely lacking this feature; patches welcome” would be good enough for me, personally.

Worth noting (since this isn’t mentioned anywhere in the text): Friendica is slow as fuck

No problem, thanks for answering anyway :)

Ohh, thanks. I’ll look into it

EDIT: It works pretty well. It even plays nice with simple tab groups. Thanks for the tip

I just said I wanted to stop doing that in the post

I’m also interested in this, I miss this very much from mastodon.

Is this a “lowprio; patches welcome” situation or the devs deliberately decided not to implement it?

[SOLVED] Can I be logged in two accounts at once in the same instance
I want to keep my admin account and my normal everyday account separate, but I keep having to open an incognito window just to be able to login to a separate account without logging off from my first account.

Just found some documentation about changing the domain name: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/administration/backup_and_restore.html?highlight=url#changing-your-domain-name

I’ll leave this here if anyone else needs it

[SOLVED] Changing instance URL (without federation)
Hello, all! I've just successfully installed a personal lemmy instance, but I did it under a temporary hostname. From what I've read in the docs, you *can't* change the domain name after you've started federating, but since I'm not enabling federation, I think I'm free to do it, but how do I go about actually changing the hostname? Is there a guide somewhere? Thank you
