Very good article. According to https://gs.statcounter.com/browser-market-share, we’ve got:
75.7% Blink (Chrome + Edge + Samsung Internet + Opera + UC Browser + Android Webview)
18.6% WebKit (Safari)
3.45% Gecko (Firefox)So, without Apple using its “anti-competitive” strategies to keep Safari in the race, we would have pretty much no competition. And if Safari wouldn’t force web-devs to stay away from all the new, shiny
webChrome standards, Firefox would be out of the race in no time as well. So, thanks Apple. For holding back competition.
Didn’t think I would ever say that…Also, I wasn’t around to observe IE at the height of its glory, but I feel like we’re not noticing the similarities between Chrome and IE, because we only remember the long decline of IE.
At some point, Microsoft also rapidly developed new standards, a.k.a. the “extend” phase. They may have been less open than Google’s standards, but the effect is the same: The competition can’t implement them in a reasonable time frame.
And that, along with other strategies, ultimately leads to the competition dropping out (Opera, IE, Edge) or losing users (Firefox, Safari), which will eventually lead to a web entirely dictated by Google.
They probably won’t “extinguish” it completely, because it is their home turf, where they make tons of money, but they will make things less comfortable for their competitors (see e.g. them wanting to replace Cookies with FLoC).
3.45% Gecko (Firefox) Damn, I need to try harder to make LibreWolf work for me. My main objection is automatically having logins work, but I am not understanding KeepPassXC well enough. I still use FF, but not nearly as much as Brave. I see I need to try LibreWolf with KeePassXC again!!! Or, at least use LibreWolf for seraches and maybe save FF for logged-in accounts.
Oh, bother…I do actually use KeePassXC with Firefox via their browser extension and that wasn’t too hard to setup, if I remember correctly.
Do you have a specific problem?
Gee, thanks for asking. uh, let me try again, so that i can formulate a decent question. Is there any easy way for me to bookmark this so I can find easily in a few days? I did try the extension and saw the KeePassXC logo show near/at the login fields, but they didn’t automatically get entered. i’ll try again. De-Googling (not using chrome browsers) seems like a huge deal in the fight for freedom of speech and information!
found the star to save this. hope I can find it in a day or two!
Ah, you want it to auto-fill on page load. You need to tick the checkbox “Automatically fill in single-credential entries” in the extension’s settings page.
thanks. i’ll look for that.
Be careful with auto-fill on page load. People manged to steal passwords thanks to this in the past. Also websites with auto-fill will know who you are even if you are not logged in.
is there a solution? an encrypted password manager? I use a different password for almost every site, but still worry. Is KeePass good enough? I’ve had a lot of trouble setting it up, but haven’t given up on the idea yet.
