I think Brave Search is cool because it does not use Bing or Google web crawlers and uses its own but I don’t think I can really trust brave as a company although I did try out Brave Search when it was in private beta and it had some good results, although I just discovered metager and that seems really cool

    Use Metager. They are open source and use their own crawlers.

      I didn’t even know open source engines even existed. Are there any drawbacks to them like reliability of results? Difficulties with “flushing” irrelevant/bad results? etc?

      I heard even to DuckDuckGo it can be difficult to understand if you are getting reliable results as you would say with Google/Bing/Yahoo!/etc. So I am not sure if this carries over.

        Yacy is another good open source search engine. I’ve had better search results from Metager than duckduckgo.
