Desktop and Mobile

Im kind of new to XMPP and this question might be stupid but I want to be sure Can someone using Conversations with OMEMO encryption talk to someone using a desktop client which is using OTR?

No, OMEMO and OTR are completely different encryption standards. Edit: they can of course talk to each other unencrypted.

But there are some good desktop clients like Gajim and Dino that support OMEMO. Even the totally outdated Pidgin client seems to have a OMEMO plugin called “lurch”, but it seems a bit hit or miss according to what I read about it.

What desktop client would you recommend?

Depends on your Desktop OS :p For basic use on Linux, Dino works fine. But in general Gajim is probably the most fully featured Desktop client for now. The most recent versions also try to do a bit better UI wise.

In addition to the other comment. OMEMO is the easy new one. OTR is the old way of encryption and not so user friendly in my opinion. (Then there is also OpenPGP as encryption option) You can quickly check OMEMO support for clients here : https://omemo.top/

So again if on Conversations one uses OMEMO and on desktop(example Gajim)they also use OMEMO they should be able to talk correct?

Yes that usually works fine, although I think it needs to be enabled in the chat as Gajim (contrary to Conversations alone) does not yet enable OMEMO by default.
