Hi, all, as the title says - I’d like to hear your takes on the situation with the referendum and all. The only sources I found are western ones so I’d rather not even read those. Thanks!
Basically the were drafting a new constitution that included a lot of cool stuff like water being a common good or inclusion of neurodiversity coded into law and so on, currently Chile has laws that resemble Usonia where everything is a “fuck you, if you dont have money die” kind of thing and this would have reversed that and made them similar to Argentina for example were almost all of the basic need are guaranteed by the State (at least in theory, of course). The right wing won, the referendum was lost and the new draft was not approved, it can still be passed again but it is hard for it to suceed.
Was there foreign involvement in stopping this new constitution that anyone is aware of? I swear I remember reading maybe a year ago about how a huge amount of the population was ready for a new constitution.
WaPo published an editorial just the other day that Chile (not the Chilean people mind you!) should reject the constitution because it would get in the way of lithium mining, cause Amerika needs that lithium for electrification.
