I like how Mastadon has a local and a federated timeline for example. I would also like a way to subscribe to instances so that I can make my own federated timeline. Is there anyway to do that?

If you are running a new instance you could follow instance admins or subscribe to a federation relay in order to get your first connections.

So it would require me to run my own federated server?

I didn’t understand your question at all in the begining. For the federated and local timelines you would need an instance for real.

Local timeline: posts from users of the instance Federated timeline: posts from users in instances connected to the current one

Maybe https://cofespace.com/ could help you.

Fediverse is a portmanteau of “federation” and “universe”. It is a common, informal name for a federation of social network servers whose main purpose is microblogging, the sharing of short, public messages.
