    Even pre-Roman, pre-Christian Europe had warrior women, e.g. Boudicca. Viking shield-maidens have been dismissed as folklore, except now quite a few bodies buried with weapons and armor are being identified as anatomically and/or genetically female (though of course, that data doesn’t bear on their social gender).

    Great thread. Another one to add since I just finished rereading the black jacobins: Haitian women fought both in battles, and as guerilla fighters against the French, Brits, and Spanish in the Haitian revolution.
