They didn’t protest, they where whistleblowers who stole (not all of them, sometimes they were just given) and published classified documents. You can’t compare that to standing with a blank or invisible posters (https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-26936770) and getting arrested, as in Russian Federation.
I can do this in my country. My Russian friend couldn’t do this in Russia.
They revealed the horrific shit that the state does and were prosecuted for it with extreme prejudice. You can clown around in your country as long as you’re deemed to be a clown and not a threat.
Yeah really had to get in on all that civilized action of massacring people in countries like Libya.
The difference is that I can protest such actions. Russians (and many more living in dictatorships) can’t.

Protesting people are not clowns.
They absolutely are when their protests accomplish nothing and create the illusion of participating in the political process.
