I am looking for a website similar to Privacytools, Prism Break, Ethical.net or switching.software but more focused on freedom than privacy, presenting the best replacements for proprietary programs in the desktop and mobile. Is there anything like that?
Alternative.to does have license badges next to their recommendations. For example typing in Evernote has Joplin as their 2nd recommendation with an “open source” badge.
If you are using duckduckgo search engine there’s also
!alt
bang you can use:evernote !alt
will lead you to the page above!Here’s a good github one: https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted
I have a list here too that I made: https://github.com/dessalines/essays/blob/master/favorite_apps_and_services.md
Thanks. I was aware about awesome-selfhosted already.
My idea was something along the lines of:
[…]
Adobe Lightroom -> Darktable, Rawtherappe
Adobe Photoshop -> GIMP, Krita
Autodesk Maya 3D -> Blender
[…]
Additional flairs like “Experimental”, “Professional” would be cool. The goal is to make discoverability quick and easy like in prism-break or OSGameClones. The audience are non-technical users who are just finding out about FOSS.
Edit: I found that AlternativeTo has a license filter and a list of most searched programs in the frontpage. That’s a reasonable option for now.

And now there is Switching.Software, which i found via ReverseEagle.org, which has their discussion community right here !reverseeagle@lemmy.ml !
(edited to clarify that ReverseEagle is how i first encountered Switching.Software, not as far as i know who maintains it)
Try FSF and FSFE for free software recommendations. And searching for specific software categories and adding “open source”. Generally works fine for me. Also, a good site to find FOSS alternatives to software is: https://alternativeto.net/
